The Most Expensive Guitars Ever Sold: From the Black Strat to Cobain's Unplugged Martin

For nearly six years, the answer to "what's the most expensive guitar ever sold?" was a scuffed 1959 Martin that Kurt Cobain played on MTV. Then, on a single evening in March 2026, the record fell three times in a row, in the same room, to three guitars that had all belonged to the same late American football team owner.
The list below is the current top 10 at public auction, with what each one sold for, who played it and how it ended up under the hammer. Some of these stories involve stolen gear, a decade in a burger restaurant and a few decades in an attic.
Quick Answers
The most expensive guitar ever sold is David Gilmour's Black Strat, which made $14.55 million at Christie's in New York on 12 March 2026.
Second is Jerry Garcia's Tiger at $11.56 million, sold the same night.
Before that sale, the record belonged to Kurt Cobain's MTV Unplugged Martin D-18E, which sold for $6.01 million in 2020.
Five of the current top 10 came from one collection, owned by Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay.
The Black Strat has now held the world record twice, in 2019 and again in 2026.
Only one guitar in the top 10 was never a famous musician's own instrument.

The Night the Record Fell Three Times
Jim Irsay spent more than 20 years buying up rock history. When he died in May 2025, aged 65, his collection went to Christie's. The first evening sale, on 12 March 2026, had 44 lots. Every one sold, and the night brought in just over $84 million.
Cobain's Fender Mustang took the world record first. Garcia's Tiger beat it. Then the Black Strat beat that. Christie's Americas president Julien Pradels summed it up afterwards: "Lot after lot we felt like we were making history."
The guitars that didn't trouble the top 10 were hardly small change either. A Gibson SG that belonged to George Harrison, the Beatle who later mortgaged his house to fund Life of Brian, went for $2.27 million. Janis Joplin's Gibson J-45 made $381,000, which is a lot of money for a guitar owned by the woman who sang Mercedes Benz without one. And a 1956 Martin D-21 that belonged to Johnny Cash, the man who played Folsom Prison, sold for $215,900.
1. David Gilmour's Black Strat: $14.55 Million
Gilmour bought this 1969 Fender Stratocaster in 1970 at Manny's on West 48th Street in New York. He needed it because Pink Floyd's gear had just been stolen after a show in New Orleans. It was a replacement, basically.
It then became the guitar on The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall. That's the Money solo, the Comfortably Numb solo and the four-note phrase that opens Shine On You Crazy Diamond, the band's tribute to their lost founder Syd Barrett. Gilmour said that phrase simply "fell out of that guitar one day".
He never left it alone. Over the years it got new pickups, new necks, different tremolo systems and even an XLR socket. The one thing he never changed was the colour.
In the late 1980s Gilmour swapped to red Strats and lent the black one to the Hard Rock Cafe in Dallas, where it stayed for about a decade. It came back damaged, with parts missing. It was put back into working order and was in his hands again for Pink Floyd's Live 8 reunion in 2005.
In June 2019 Gilmour sold his guitars at Christie's and gave all $21.49 million to the environmental charity ClientEarth. Irsay paid $3,975,000 for the Black Strat, a world record at the time. In 2026 Christie's put the estimate at $2 million to $4 million. After 21 minutes of bidding it sold for $14.55 million. The buyer hasn't been named.
2. Jerry Garcia's Tiger: $11.56 Million
Tiger was built by luthier Doug Irwin, who took six years over it and delivered it in 1979. It was Garcia's main guitar for most of the 1980s.
There's a disagreement about when he last played it. The usual version, repeated by Relix, is that it was the final Grateful Dead show at Soldier Field in Chicago on 9 July 1995. Live for Live Music puts its last outing at a Jerry Garcia Band show at the Warfield in San Francisco that April. Either way, it's one of the last guitars he ever picked up on stage.
Irsay bought Tiger in 2002 for $957,500. Christie's estimated $1 million to $2 million. The hammer came down at $9.5 million, or $11.56 million with fees. The buyer has been reported as Chicago collector Bobby Tseitlin, though Christie's hasn't confirmed that.
3. Kurt Cobain's Smells Like Teen Spirit Mustang: $6.9 Million
This is the left-handed 1969 Fender Mustang in Lake Placid Blue from the Smells Like Teen Spirit video, which first aired on 29 September 1991. It wasn't babied. Cobain smashed it into a mixing desk at a club show in Dallas that year and the neck joint had to be repaired.

Irsay paid $4.55 million for it at Julien's in May 2022, against an estimate of $800,000. At Christie's it made $6,907,000 and held the world record for a matter of minutes.
4. Kurt Cobain's MTV Unplugged Martin: $6.01 Million
Cobain played this 1959 Martin D-18E at Nirvana's MTV Unplugged taping in November 1993, less than five months before his death in Seattle. It was the seventh of only 302 made.
When Julien's sold it in June 2020, the case still held his things: a half-used pack of strings, three picks and a small suede bag decorated with a miniature silver knife, fork and spoon. The guitar had passed to his daughter Frances Bean and then to her ex-husband.
The buyer was Peter Freedman, the Australian founder of RØDE Microphones, who said: "I didn't even buy it for me." He meant it. He's since donated it to the Royal College of Music in London, which also happens to own the oldest surviving guitar in the world, made in 1581.
5. Eric Clapton's MTV Unplugged Martin: $4.1 Million
The other Unplugged guitar on the list is a 1939 Martin 000-42, the main instrument on Clapton's 1992 MTV session. He sold it in June 2004 to raise money for his Crossroads Centre in Antigua. It made $791,500, then a record for an acoustic. At the Irsay sale it went for $4,101,000.
6. Eddie Van Halen's Hot for Teacher Kramer: $3.93 Million
The red, white and black striped Kramer from the 1984 Hot for Teacher video was Van Halen's main guitar in 1983 and 1984. Around 1990 he gave it to his retiring drum tech. Sotheby's sold it in April 2023 for $3,932,000, above a top estimate of $3 million. Not bad for a band best known offstage for banning brown M&Ms.
7. Eric Clapton's The Fool: $3 Million
A 1964 Gibson SG with a psychedelic paint job by the Dutch art collective The Fool, and the source of the "woman tone" on Cream's early records. Clapton, who'd go on to join George Harrison on stage at the Concert for Bangladesh, eventually parted with it and it later belonged to Todd Rundgren.
Irsay bought it at Julien's in November 2023 for $1.27 million. Twenty-eight months later it sold for $3,003,000.
8. John Lennon's Help! Framus: $2.86 Million
Lennon played this German-made Framus Hootenanny 12-string on You've Got to Hide Your Love Away and on Norwegian Wood and Girl from Rubber Soul. At the end of 1965 he gave it to Gordon Waller of Peter and Gordon. Waller passed it to his manager, and it sat in an attic for decades.
Beatles gear expert Andy Babiuk authenticated it by matching the wood grain to photos and film footage. Julien's sold it on 29 May 2024 for $2,857,500, the highest price ever paid for a Beatle's guitar.
9. Eddie Van Halen's 1982 Kramer: $2.73 Million
Van Halen's second entry is a 1982 Kramer he helped build, then signed and gave to his guitar tech Rudy Leiren. It was later owned and played by Mick Mars of Mötley Crüe. Sotheby's sold it in October 2025 after a month of online bidding.

10. The Reach Out to Asia Strat: About $2.7 Million
The odd one out. This was an ordinary Mexican-made Fender Stratocaster until Bryan Adams got his famous friends to sign it for victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, Mick Jagger & Keith Richards, Paul McCartney, Brian May, Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend, Sting, Liam Gallagher, Tony Iommi, Mark Knopfler, Angus and Malcolm Young, Bryan Adams all put their names on it.
It was auctioned in Qatar in 2005. The price is usually given as $2.7 million, though some reports say $2.8 million. It held the world record until Gilmour's own guitar took it in 2019.

What the List Tells You
Three things stand out. First, the auction houses keep getting it wrong. Tiger was expected to make $2 million at most and sold for nearly six times that.
Second, the guitars that go highest are tied to something people have watched. Two of the top five were played on MTV Unplugged, and two more in the top 10 starred in famous videos.
Third, prices have moved fast. The Black Strat went from $3.975 million to $14.55 million in under seven years, with nobody adding a single note to its history in between.
