'Tickets' had lived a life. He was a draper's assistant in Paris, washed dishes in San Francisco, worked as a night-watchman and then taught French in Chicago, before washing up in London selling the little price cards shopkeepers stuck in their windows. Each card cost a shilling and he kept about fivepence, which left him with around 8 to 10 shillings a week. He got by on potatoes, herring and bread and cheese. John Thomson photographed him in 1877 for Street Life in London.
