Caney the Clown
£25.99Price
Meet Caney. He used to be a clown at London theatres like the Garrick and the Britannia, until a burst vein ended his stage career. Broke and out of work, he picked up umbrella mending from a pedlar and ended up re-caning chairs around Drury Lane, which is how he got his nickname. John Thomson photographed him at work in 1877 for Street Life in London, one of the first photo documentaries of ordinary working people. Look closely and you'll spot the servant girl watering the window box behind him. Printed on thick, museum-grade matte paper that really suits the original sepia tones.
