The London Boardmen
The sandwich-board men were walking adverts, plodding the streets from about 10 till 5 for around eighteen pence a day while the contractors skimmed a cut. Advertisers got creative, too. One trunk-maker had men hide inside his trunks with just their heads and feet sticking out, so the luggage seemed to walk down the street in single file. The men themselves had all sorts of pasts, including an old soldier who'd fought at the relief of Lucknow. John Thomson photographed them in 1877 for Street Life in London.
