The young harper in this picture came from an Italian family based in Deptford. He'd only been in England about two years but already spoke fluent English, and he earned nearly as much as a skilled tradesman. Plenty of Italian boys worked the streets for padroni who took their earnings, while the organ-grinders played bits of Wagner operas, which apparently gave a lot of Londoners their first taste of his music. John Thomson took this in 1877 for Street Life in London.
