The Seller of Shell-Fish
A husband and wife ran this whelk and oyster barrow on a street corner opposite the Greyhound pub, whatever the weather. He was up before dawn at Billingsgate buying stock, and rarely cleared more than five shillings a day, topping it up with carpet beating and window cleaning. He'd once had his own greengrocer's shop with a horse and cart, but lost the lot after two of his sons died of smallpox. Look out for the young newspaper boy, who bought a halfpenny's worth of hot eel soup. Taken by John Thomson in 1877.
