November Effigies
Bonfire Night, Victorian style. A costermonger in south-east London built this guy and paraded it round the streets, with boys paid a shilling or so a day to help pull it along. A good first day could bring in 30 shillings in pennies from the crowds. Here's the twist though. The guy often didn't get burned at all, because its spangly costume was worth reusing, so only the straw and sawdust stuffing went on the bonfire. John Thomson photographed it in 1877 for Street Life in London.
