Public Disinfectors
When someone in the parish caught an infectious disease, these were the men who came for the bedding and clothes. They hauled everything off in a sealed hand-cart to a gas-heated iron oven near Ebury Bridge, baked it at about 280 degrees, then burned sulphur in the cart so nothing got reinfected on the way back. They'd been road menders before, and earned sixpence an hour, often working twelve-hour days. That's Mr Dickson, the Inspector of Nuisances, in the shot. John Thomson took it in 1877 for Street Life in London.
