Flying Dustmen
Lambeth's dust carts were meant to call at every house twice a week, but the 'flying dustmen' did things differently. They were unlicensed collectors who got their name from flitting between districts to dodge the inspectors, picking up any households the regular men had missed. At night they'd quietly dump the dust along roads or under railway arches. Rubbish was worth money too, with old bottles, rags and bones selling for about three shillings a hundredweight. John Thomson took this in 1877 for Street Life in London.
