'Mush-fakers' were umbrella menders, and on a rainy day the good ones could make a couple of pounds. This one was taken on Clapham Common, where they worked alongside the ginger-beer sellers, who did their best trade on Sunday mornings outside pubs that hadn't opened yet. The ginger beer itself was often brewed in a shared laundry copper, the same one used to wash several families' clothes, which is probably best not thought about. John Thomson took the photo in 1877 for Street Life in London.
