This was the opening photo in Street Life in London, and it shows a group of travelling hawkers with their caravan on a patch of waste ground in Battersea. The man in charge, William Hampton, never learned to read or write but was known as a fair-spoken, honest sort. The stories in this chapter are wild. One old hawker supposedly kept around £9,000 in a sack in his van, until two men sent his boy off to buy apples and made off with £1,400 of it. Taken by John Thomson in 1877.
