Recruiting Sergeants at Westminster
Army recruiting sergeants used to gather outside the Mitre and Dove pub near Westminster Abbey, on the lookout for likely lads. The man front and centre is Sergeant Ison of the 6th Dragoon Guards. Recruiters earned a guinea for every man who passed the medical, but lost out if he did a runner. One sergeant on this corner, Henry Cooper, signed up over 3,000 men in about thirteen years. John Thomson took the photo in 1877 for Street Life in London.
