The Old Clothes of St Giles
This second-hand clothes shop was in Lumber Court, a narrow lane in St Giles packed with dealers in old clothes and worn-out furniture. The woman who ran it made about thirty shillings a week and kept a surprisingly spotless shop. The trade had its tricks. Old silk hats were 'renovated' by cutting off the greasy brim, ironing the nap and filling any holes with ink, glue and paint, then sold on for two or three shillings. John Thomson took this in 1877 for Street Life in London.
