The Crawlers
The 'Crawlers' were the poorest of the poor in St Giles, too worn out to beg properly, so they huddled on the workhouse steps in Short's Gardens living on stale bread and used tea leaves. The woman here was a former tailoress whose eyesight had failed. She minded a friend's baby for about eight hours a day, and her only pay was a cup of tea and a bit of bread. John Thomson took this in 1877 for Street Life in London, and it's one of the most haunting pictures in the whole book.
