In 1877 London had over 8,000 cabs and more than 10,000 cab drivers. One of these men started out as a pot-boy in his uncle's pub, then worked on the trams before saving for two years to buy a horse. Most drivers handed about two thirds of their takings to the cab owners, who put the daily hire charge up again and again, including an extra 4 shillings on Christmas Day. One regular fare was a bricklayer who'd inherited £1,300 and threw coins to street kids from the cab. Taken by John Thomson for Street Life in London.
