The Street Locksmith
A street locksmith's stall on Whitechapel Road. Londoners lost so many keys that the stallholders bought up the lost ones and sometimes sold them back to their owners for a shilling. Locks and keys here went for about half what a shop would charge, and the locksmiths restocked from the dust yards where the rubbish men dumped everything they collected. The man in the photo hadn't touched a drink since he was sixteen and was father to sixteen kids. John Thomson took this in 1877 for Street Life in London.
