The Street Fruit Trade
Costermongers selling strawberries off a barrow. Three of them would club together £4 to buy a big lot at the Covent Garden auction first thing, then sell the lot the same day for about fourpence a punnet, because, as one of them put it, strawberries won't last a night in a coster's lodgings. One coster couldn't read or write but kept all his accounts in numbers, so '2 8 4' meant two sacks of potatoes, eight shillings, plus fourpence porterage. Taken by John Thomson in 1877 for Street Life in London.
