When the Thames burst its banks, Lambeth's low-lying streets got the worst of it. After one flood a widow's tiny room was left with a tide mark four feet up the wall. Mrs Rowlett, who'd run a rag store for 27 years, said the main thing was that they'd 'saved our piano'. Locals like Jack Smith scraped a living picking scrap iron, coal and wood out of the river shallows, and moonlighted as a comedian in pub shows. John Thomson photographed the aftermath in 1877 for Street Life in London.
