Before the NHS there were street doctors. This man had been a driver for a City firm until his eyesight failed, and after trying three hospitals and a seaside cure he was left nearly blind. He sold fish on the New Cut for a while, trusting his customers to pay because he couldn't see the money, then an ointment maker gave him stock on trust. So he became a 'doctor', selling Arabian Family Ointment from a penny to half a crown a box. Taken by John Thomson in 1877 for Street Life in London.
