Victorian advertising was a cut-throat business. Bill posters earned about four shillings a day, and on Boat Race day one Soho firm sent men out at 2, 6, 8 and 10 in the morning just to paste over their rivals' posters. Wall space was so valuable that some ruined houses were left standing because their walls made more money as billboards, and hoardings on Queen Victoria Street went for over £300 a month. John Thomson photographed the men who did the work in 1877 for Street Life in London.
