Hookey Alf of Whitechapel
Meet Ted Coally, better known as 'Hookey Alf'. He started out as a trunk-maker's apprentice, then a fall from an iron ladder at the Whitechapel coal wharfs cost him his left arm, and a hook took its place. After that he hung around outside a brewery on Whitechapel Road hoping to help unload the day's coal for a meal and a few pence, and when that dried up he sold matches at a railway station. John Thomson photographed him outside an old Whitechapel inn in 1877 for Street Life in London.
