Dealer in Fancy-Ware
Thomson reckoned this was one of the best-looking barrows in London. The dealer used to be a country miller earning 16 shillings a week, came to London with 10 shillings in his pocket, and after a failed stoneware shop he put his last savings into a 'swag' barrow of trinkets. His stock included gilt wedding rings for a penny to threepence. Some wives bought them to wear in place of the real ones they'd pawned for drink, so their husbands wouldn't notice. Taken in 1877 for Street Life in London.
