Covent Garden Labourers
These are the men who kept Covent Garden's flower trade moving, working for a well-known florist who dealt only in flowers. The 'odd-men' were paid per delivery, so a busy week could bring in over two pounds and a quiet one nothing at all. They even had to pay eighteen pence for a ticket just to look for work in the market. The older men who couldn't carry pots any more ended up in a cellar gumming flowers, where the scent gave them headaches. Taken by John Thomson in 1877 for Street Life in London.
