Covent Garden Flower Women
These flower sellers are standing by the pillars of St Paul's church in Covent Garden, a pitch that got handed down from one generation to the next. It was a living that depended entirely on the weather. On a good summer week a seller could clear over a pound, but after twelve hours in the rain some went home with less than a shilling. One of these women was supporting a sick husband, who helped make the posies, while her son worked as a shoe-black. John Thomson took this in 1877 for Street Life in London.
