The Cheap Fish of St Giles's
This is Seven Dials, and the man with the barrow is Joseph Carney. On the day Thomson took this picture he'd bought 500 herrings for 25 shillings, selling the big ones for a penny and the small ones for a halfpenny. The street market looked after its own, too. There was an orphan everyone called 'Ugly' who earned pennies helping with the barrows, and 17-year-old 'Little Mic-Mac Gosling', who stood just 3 foot 10 and had once sailed to South Africa. Taken in 1877 for Street Life in London.
