William Parragreen, aka 'Cast-Iron Billy', drove London omnibuses from 1834, the year the old Houses of Parliament burned down. He worked for the London Conveyance Company for fourteen years and finished up with the London General Omnibus Company. By the end he'd partly lost the use of his left hand, so his reins were tied to his coat, and he eventually lost his job because he couldn't keep up with the younger drivers. Bus men worked around fourteen hours a day. John Thomson photographed him in 1877 for Street Life in London.
