Bizarre Spy Gadgets: The Rectal Toolkit, the Scrotum Radio and Other Real Cold War Inventions

James Bond gets an exploding pen and a car with an ejector seat. Real Cold War spies got something considerably less glamorous, and often considerably more uncomfortable. The CIA and KGB genuinely spent decades and millions of dollars designing tools meant to help agents hide, escape, kill or eavesdrop without getting caught, and some of what they came up with sounds more like a dare than actual tradecraft. Here's a look at some of the strangest gadgets that real intelligence agencies actually built and, in a few cases, actually used.
The Rectal Tool Kit
Top of most lists for good reason. During the Cold War, the CIA issued certain operatives a tightly sealed, pill shaped capsule, roughly the size of a small flashlight, designed to be concealed inside the body in a place standard strip searches wouldn't reach. Inside were miniature tools: drill bits, saws, a lock pick, a small file and a screwdriver, everything an agent might need to break out of a cell if captured.
The engineering challenge wasn't the tools themselves, it was the container. Vince Houghton, curator and historian at the International Spy Museum in Washington D.C., has explained that the capsule had to be built from materials that wouldn't splinter or develop sharp edges under pressure, and it had to seal tightly enough that nothing could leak in or out. The idea was straightforward even if the execution wasn't: get captured, get searched, retain the kit, then retrieve it once the guards had left and use it to escape. Not exactly the part of the job recruitment brochures tend to mention.
The Scrotum Concealment Device
If the rectal kit was the CIA's plan A for hiding something on your body, the scrotum concealment device was plan B. Designed in the late 1960s by Tony Mendez, who went on to become the CIA's chief of disguise and was later played by Ben Affleck in the film Argo, the device was built to hide a miniature radio inside a fake scrotum, on the reasoning that even a thorough search by hostile guards was unlikely to linger there.

Only one prototype was ever built, and it never made it into the field. According to accounts from CIA veterans, when Mendez demonstrated the device to then CIA director Richard Helms, Helms reportedly blushed and declined to approve it for operational use. Sometimes the most ingenious solution to a problem is also the one that dies in the pitch meeting.
The Kiss of Death
Not every strange spy gadget was American. The KGB's most infamous piece of concealed weaponry was the so called kiss of death, a single shot 4.5mm pistol built into an ordinary looking tube of lipstick. Pressing the barrel against a target and twisting the base fired the round, and the whole device was small and unremarkable enough to slip past border checks that a male agent's smuggled weapon never would have.

The first known example turned up at an American checkpoint in West Berlin in 1965. It's now on permanent display at the International Spy Museum, a reminder that Cold War espionage occasionally required agents to carry weapons that doubled as cosmetics.
The Dead Rat Drop
Rats show up more than once in the annals of strange espionage. Britain's WW2 sabotage service famously packed explosive into dead rats meant for German boiler rooms, but the CIA had its own, less violent take decades later. To pass cash or messages to an asset in a heavily surveilled city like Moscow without a face to face meeting, officers would hollow out a rat carcass, hide the material inside, sew it back up and leave it at a dead drop site, on the reliable theory that almost nobody wants to pick up a dead rat off the street. Local cats had fewer objections, and kept stealing the drops until the CIA started dousing them in Tabasco sauce and then wormwood oil to put them off.
The Insectothopter
Long before consumer drones existed, the CIA built one shaped like a dragonfly. Developed in the 1970s and hand painted to actually resemble the insect, the Insectothopter was a miniature unmanned aerial vehicle powered by a tiny gas driven engine that flapped its wings for lift and thrust, with the spent gas vented out the back for a bit of extra push.

In calm conditions it reportedly flew several hundred yards, which was a genuinely impressive feat of 1970s micro engineering. The problem was wind. Even a light crosswind made the Insectothopter almost impossible to control, and the project was shelved before it ever saw real use in the field. It stands today as an early proof of concept for exactly the kind of micro drone surveillance that's become routine decades later.
Acoustic Kitty
If the Insectothopter was an ambitious failure, Acoustic Kitty was a spectacular one. In the 1960s, the CIA spent an estimated 20 million dollars over five years trying to turn an actual cat into a walking surveillance device, on the theory that a cat could wander close to foreign officials without arousing suspicion.
A veterinary surgeon implanted a microphone in the cat's ear canal and a small radio transmitter at the base of its skull, then wove a thin wire antenna into its fur. The plan hit an obvious snag almost immediately: cats are famously difficult to direct anywhere on command. During its first real world test, handlers parked the cat near a Washington D.C. park bench to record a conversation between two men. The cat wandered into the road instead and was hit and killed by a passing taxi. The program was quietly cancelled shortly afterward, and a redacted CIA memo later concluded, with a straight face, that using trained cats in the field simply wasn't practical.
The Bulgarian Umbrella
Not every strange gadget was ultimately harmless. In 1978, Bulgarian dissident Georgi Markov was walking near a bus stop in London when he felt a sharp jab in his leg. He'd been struck by a modified umbrella, believed to have been built by the KGB for use by Bulgarian intelligence, engineered to fire a tiny pellet loaded with the poison ricin into his leg without him realising what had happened. Markov died four days later. It remains one of the most notorious assassinations of the entire Cold War, and a grim reminder that not every piece of espionage engineering was designed just to help someone escape.

The Silver Dollar with a Needle Inside
Suicide capsules go back further than most people assume. Britain's Special Operations Executive and its American counterpart, the OSS, issued L-pills, small glass capsules of potassium cyanide coated in rubber, to agents parachuted behind enemy lines during the Second World War, with instructions to bite down on it rather than risk capture and interrogation.
The idea carried into the Cold War in stranger forms. U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers, flying reconnaissance missions deep into Soviet airspace, was issued a hollowed out silver dollar coin with a tiny needle hidden inside, tipped with the poison saxitoxin, meant to be used if he was shot down and about to be captured. When Powers actually was shot down over the Soviet Union in 1960, he chose not to use it and was taken alive, an incident that became a major Cold War diplomatic crisis. Around the same period, the CIA also issued some operatives eyeglasses with a cyanide pellet hidden in the frame's arm, designed so a captured agent could casually chew on it without anyone noticing.

Cameras Hidden in Everything
Not every gadget was about escape or assassination. A huge amount of Cold War engineering went into simply getting a camera somewhere it wouldn't be noticed. The tiny Minox camera, popular with both Soviet and East German intelligence through the 1960s and 70s, was small and flat enough to be built into everyday objects: hairbrushes, clothing brushes and shaving cream cans all turn up in declassified concealment device catalogues, each one hollowed out to hold a camera behind a locking panel that only opened with the right tool.
East German engineers took the idea further with a portable chessboard rigged so that inserting a paperclip into one specific socket, out of 64 identical ones, popped open a hidden compartment holding a microdot camera. Devices like it were typically built as one off pieces rather than standard kit, on the logic that if one operative's gear was ever discovered, it wouldn't compromise every other agent carrying the same design.
The Stasi's Smell Collection
East Germany's secret police, the Stasi, took a lower tech but equally strange approach to surveillance. Throughout the 1970s and 80s, Stasi officers collected scent samples from anyone considered a suspicious person, wiping a cloth on a chair the individual had sat on or an item they'd handled, then sealing it inside an airtight glass jar. The idea was that trained tracking dogs could later be given the jar to sniff and use it to identify or follow that person if needed. Thousands of these scent jars were produced, and a number of them survived the fall of the Berlin Wall and are now held in German archives and museum collections as one of the more unsettling relics of Cold War surveillance.
It's tempting to read all this as proof that real spycraft eventually catches up to the movies, but the truth runs the other way around. The first James Bond film, Dr. No, came out in 1962, years before most of these devices existed, and the gadget obsessed spy fiction it kicked off almost certainly nudged real intelligence agencies toward embracing their own, stranger toolkit. The CIA and KGB weren't copying the movies so much as competing with an image of espionage that Hollywood had already sold to the public, using actual engineers, actual budgets and, in at least one case, an actual cat.
