Samurai in Armour
£25.99Price
Three samurai in full armour, posed in a Yokohama photo studio sometime in the 1880s. The twist is that by the time Kusakabe Kimbei took this, the samurai were already finished. Japan scrapped their stipends in 1876 and banned them from wearing swords in public the same year. So this is less a battlefield and more a costume drama, staged for foreign visitors who wanted a souvenir of old Japan to take home. Kimbei started out hand-colouring photos for Felice Beato and Baron von Stillfried before opening his own studio in 1881, and you can see that skill in every blue, green and red picked out by hand. Restored and printed on thick, museum-grade matte paper.
