Dancing Party
£25.99Price
Three women caught mid-dance, arms up, in their best kimono. Kusakabe Kimbei ran one of Yokohama's busiest photo studios, and he often hired geisha to pose for pictures like this, which he sold to foreign tourists by the album-load. Every bit of colour you can see was added by hand, brushstroke by brushstroke, onto a black and white albumen print. Kimbei learned that craft as a colourist for other photographers before setting up on his own in 1881, and by the 1890s his was one of the leading studios selling Japan to the West. Restored and printed on thick, museum-grade matte paper.
